First Intro To Live Birds

Last Saturday, I bought 3 live pigeons from another member of the Copper State Hunting Retriever Club who traps them to train his own dogs. We tied the wings together on the pigeons so that they couldn't fly off and then let Soldier chase them around. It was hilarious. Here are some pictures of the "chase" and I will try to see if I can upload the actual video that we took later. Enjoy

Soldier At 17 weeks old

Don't be decieved by that cute puppy face. Soldier has moved into the teenager phase and is being quite a handful. Still he is very calm compared to what I've seen in most labs. And he is smart as a tack! He is 17 weeks old today, and weighs 35 lbs. He has been gaining 3 lbs. per week so I figure that by the time he is 6 months old, he will be pushing 60+ lbs. Whew...

More Duck Hunting NEWS!

So, When we got Soldier as a pup, I decided that it would be fun to train him to do what our forefathers originally bred him to do: HUNT! Labrador Retrievers were and still are used as water dogs to retrieve waterfowl that has been shot down. I have NEVER done any hunting before, and I feel like my manliness has suffered somewhat. So I have been reading and talking to people (trying to get plugged in to the social pipeline). Soldier's retrieving skills are coming right along, and for Father's Day, Sunny gave me some money to put towards a shotgun. Here is a picture of the one I am currently eyeing. Soldier's Dad- What A Stud!

This is a picture of Soldier's Dad. He turns 2 years old in August, and is already dominating in the Show ring! Who knows, maybe Soldier will follow in his dads footsteps!

Flagstaff Fresh Air

Sunny and I are loving Flagstaff. The air feels fresh, at night the temp drops to about 60 degrees, we have a backyard for the dog, and lots more room in the house. We have a neighbor couple that are about our age and seem really fun, and we have a 30 acre park across the street from our house. I don't think I'm going to ever want to live anywhere else!
I took these pictures of Soldier on the urban trail behind the park. I call it Pride Rock, because it looks just like the scene from Lion King.
Last but not least, my cute wife. I have a cute wife, a dog, a beautiful city to live in. All i need is about a dozen little Jacobs running around, and I will be living the GREAT AMERICAN DREAM!

Sunny's Graduation

Sunny graduated from her professional program last month and just got a job working at Flagstaff Medical Center. She is thrilled to be finally working in her field and she is doing great! That is Sunny's mon and Dad (Jan and Dave) in the picture.
Sunny helped us to find her during the graduation ceremony by puffy painting a large sun on the top of her cap in glow-in-the-dark paint.

He Finally Arrived!

We finally got our new puppy and decided to name him Soldier. He is so fun and we have had our hands full trying to keep up with his chewing fiasco.

We picked out our puppy today and get to take him home in 3 weeks. He is a yellow labrador retriever, but he is almost white in color. Anyone have any ideas for names?
He even crossed his paws for the picture!

Flagstaff Here I Come!!!

I just got an acceptance letter to my top choice for physical therapy school. I will be moving to Flagstaff, AZ come the end of May where I will become a Northern Arizona University LUMBERJACK! We are soooo excited to leave the big town, and settle down for three years in a nice quiet outdoorsy town where I will be able to mountain bike, fish, and hike to my hearts content.

Well guys, I had hoped that on the guessandwinsweeps website, it would announce the winner and the winning number, but no luck. They are only going to notify the winner by email, and they should be doing it toay. Hopefully out of the forty of us, we will have a winner! I heard we already have some good joo-joo in the family with Heidi and Gary winning the Martha Stewart prize (Congrats Guys!). Well, let's keep our fingers crossed everybody. Thanks again for your support!

The Wilderness Journey

Disregard the red line in the picture. In my institute manual it says that: "The distance from Jerusalem to the Red Sea (the Gulf of Aqaba) is about 180 miles through hot, barren country infested anciently by many marauders (i.e. thieves). Lehi and his family [had] traveled 3 days' journey beyond this point (see 1 NE 2:5-6). This meant at least a 12-14 day trip one way, which gives added meaning to Nephi's response in 1 NE 3:7 (I will go and do...)"

On a side note (Jacob's commentary),when Lehi asks them to go back to Jerusalem the third time to get Ishmael's family, their future wives, you don't read about any complaints that time do you?!?

Back To School

Sunny & I had our first day back to school. Sunny is in her last semester before she can sit for the board exams, and I am in my last semester before I graduate from UNLV! Whoopee!

Note: We did not try to match shoe color at all. Total married coincidence.

Were the “Golden” Plates Gold?

What were the gold plates like? If we had “hefted” and examined the plates for ourselves, as the Eight Witnesses did in 1829, what would we have learned about them?

Joseph Smith said that the set of plates was 8 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 6 inches thick. That makes about .1666 cubic foot, which would weigh about 200 pounds if made of pure 24K gold. That is a lot for Joseph Smith to have carried.

The plates may have weighed less and still have been gold. Metallurgist-blacksmith Reed Putnam has shown that hammered plates of 24K gold would weigh only half as much as a solid block the same size. That would make the plates about 100 pounds, a more reasonable weight for Joseph to have carried.

However, Putnam also points out that if the plates were made of a common Central American alloy called Tumbaga, made of 8K gold and copper, they would have weighed around 53 pounds. Interestingly enough, William Smith, brother of the Prophet, lifted the plates while they were in a pillowcase and estimated that they weighed 60 pounds, and Martin Harris, one of the Three Witnesses, said that they weighed 40 to 50 pounds. William also said the plates were a mixture of gold and copper.

Pure gold would be too soft to make useful plates. But Tumbaga is remarkably tough and resilient, even in sheets as thin as the gold plates are described as being (like thick paper, Emma said, or “not quite as thick as common tin,” according to Joseph, Martin Harris, and David Whitmer). In ancient America, Tumbaga was commonly treated with a simple acid (such as citric acid), making it easy to engrave and turning it from its natural red to a “golden” color.

Whether the plates were made of Tumbaga or some other alloy, reasonable sense can be made of the physical description of the plates and of their possible metallurgical composition.
